Crown, defence argue convicted Nelson Street killer’s sentencing

If Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Alliston Seale gets his way, convicted killer Ryan Omar Samuel “would not be able to lift a gun” by the time he is released from prison, the High Court heard on Friday.
And Seale contended that a recent ruling by the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) supported his call for Samuel to be incarcerated for 25 to 35 years for his “heinous” killing of Charley Dume over seven years ago.
Samuel, of Grape Hall, St Lucy, was found guilty of manslaughter in the April 26, 2014 shooting death of the 25-year-old Dume in Coyote’s Den Bar, Nelson Street, The City.
Couple charged with breaching protocols

A husband and wife were hauled before the law court today on a breach of one of the COVID-19 protocols.
The COVID-19 Monitoring Unit has alleged that Jasmattie and Stephen Grant, of Crawford Land, Black Rock, St Michael being the owners of Sawyers Variety failed to keep the establishment closed as mandated by
Paragraph (3) subparagraph (1) of the Emergency Management (COVID-19) (Curfew) (No.3) Directive.
They plead not guilty to the February 6 charge when they appeared before Chief Magistrate Ian Weekes today in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court.
Their attorney Mohia Ma’at informed the court that due to the architectural design of his clients’ house they had no choice but to open the door to the shop which is located at the front of the dwelling.
Yearwood owns up to guns and ammunition by breadfruit tree

Eight years ago, police mounted surveillance and executed a search warrant that led to the discovery of three firearms, including a silencer and over 50 rounds of ammunition stashed under a breadfruit tree at Gilkes Road, Benthams, St Lucy.
Today during a virtual sitting of the High Court Andre O’Bryan Yearwood, of Retreat Road, Connell Town, St Lucy took responsibility for the illegal weapons.
Before Justice Randall Worrell – and accompanied by his attorney-at-law Mohia Ma’at – the now 39-year-old pool technician pleaded guilty to the January 6, 2013 charges of possession of a shotgun, possession of a 380 auto calibre pistol and possession of a silencer without having the valid licences as well as possession of 59 rounds of ammunition without having a valid permit.
