Warrior-Tombigbee Waterway Association Holds 71st Annual Meeting

May 24, 2021 By Frank McCormack Familiar faces abounded at the 71st annual meeting of the Warrior-Tombigbee Waterway Association (WTWA), held May 17–19 at the Grand Hotel Marriott in Point Clear, Ala. The 2021 meeting came just 10 months after last year’s gathering, which was not only delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic but also held, in part, virtually, with many attendees and presenters tuning in remotely. Not so this year. With COVID restrictions eased and vaccines readily available, the WTWA meeting was back to normal, with 150 waterway stakeholders meeting together, first for a golf tournament and Monday night social hour, then for two days focused on waterway management and business development.

Conrad Shipyard Holds Keel Laying Ceremony For GLDD Hopper Dredge

May 4, 2021 By Frank McCormack Morgan City, La.-based Conrad Shipyard held a keel-laying ceremony April 16 for the 6,500-cubic-yard trailing suction hopper dredge the company is building for Houston-based Great Lakes Dredge & Dock (GLDD) at its deepwater shipyard in Amelia, La. Attending the ceremony were executives from Conrad and Great Lakes, shipyard workers and other guests, representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard and Louisiana Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser. Addressing the crowd, Conrad Chairman and CEO Johnny Conrad said the ceremonial keel laying is just one of many milestones Great Lakes and the shipyard have shared through the years. “Our valued relationship began more than 35 years ago, and in that time, we have worked together on several projects, including deck barges, anchor barges and dredge support equipment,” Conrad said. “In addition to those new construction projects, we have done repair and conve

Coffeeville Lock On Black Warrior-Tombigbee Waterway Closes For Emergency Repairs

April 21, 2021 By Frank McCormack The Mobile Engineer District announced April 14 the emergency closure of Coffeeville Lock at Mile 116.6 of the Black Warrior-Tombigbee Waterway (BWT) due to damage to the lower miter gate’s operating machinery, which rendered the lower gate inoperable. Chad Brumelow with the BWT/Alabama-Coosa Project Management Office said the closure was triggered by a crack in the reaction roller assembly for the lower miter gate. “It wasn’t any kind of one incident,” Brumelow said. “This was a crack in a reaction roller assembly, so more than likely it’s long-term fatigue that caused the cracking.” Brumelow said the lock, which is the lowermost lock on the system, will likely be closed four to five days, with a targeted reopening of April 19.
