fine, despite persistent fears of a recession. the u.s. government released the latest jobs report this morning. and it far exceeded what economists expected. it showed the economy adding 528,000 jobs in july. that s more than double the number analysts expected. on employment, falling to 3.5%. and these numbers present a new complication for the federal reserve, which has been hoping to cool the jobs market, in an effort to bring down inflation. at the same time, senate democrats now poised to pass a massive bill that could impact everything from the price of prescription drugs to the fight against climate change. we re going to have more on that in just a moment. we start first with the strong jobs report and cnn s matt egan is live with us in new york, cnn s john harwood is live at the white house. matt, we ll start with you. break down the numbers for us, tell us what these numbers are showing. jessica, this is a hot jobs market that just defied all expectations but get

this fire that s happening in hawaii right now really reminds me of a fire that we saw in colorado in december of 2021 where a community, brush fire driven by winds burned down the entire community. and this is unfortunately becoming a normal for us. we are continuing to bring in our personnel to support the response and recovery of these communities, but we are also investing a lot of time and funding to support reducing the impacts from these to our mitigation programs. we have to start looking at what these threats are going to look like as a result of climate change five or ten years from now, and putting money and investment into how we re going to reduce the impacts of the future threats that we re going to face. deanne criswell, i know you have your hands full not just with this. thank you for taking the time. we appreciate it. i want to bring in democratic congresswoman jill ta cue ta who represents most of the hawaiian islands, i can t imagine that
severity and the magnitude, but our wourkforce is ready to respond. if we continue to see the rise in the severity of these disaster and the number of these disasters, i think there would be a time in the future we wouldn t be able to keep up, which is why we have been so focused on trying to get ahead of the impacts that we re seeing from climate change, and investing billions of dollars through our mitigation programs to help communities reduce the impacts that they re seeing. and so is that what you feel like is you can the best kind of defense against climate change right now. we know it is probably only going to get worse as time goes on. i think as we work as a nation, and, you know, across the world to reduce the impacts or reduce the changing climate that we re seeing, where fema s role comes in as to make sure that we are ready to respond to the consequences of that. and where we can also help to reduce the impacts and so there is some long-term change that is going to
