The Supreme Court has asked the GoI to address the asymmetry in medical claims, particularly in the case of Ayurveda. Allopathy, a modern medicine, has gained popularity due to its scientific scrutiny, while Ayurveda relies on advertising and consumer protection rules for deterrence. A harmonised approach would involve regulating the active pharma ingredient rather than the final product, reducing misselling but not eliminating it.
The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) conducted a stakeholders consultation on Misleading Advertisement in Coaching Sector in January, which was attended by Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT), Ministry of Education, Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), National Law University (NLU) Delhi, FIITJEE, Khan Global Studies and Ikigai Law, the statement added.
BAT was fined 6 million euros and Amazon 1 million euros for failing to provide sufficient information to consumers about the nicotine content and corresponding health risks from use of the Glo Hyper X2 and Glo Hyper Air products, AGCM s statement said.
