an arctic blast is bringing the coldest temperatures in years to parts of the country. al roker is tracking it. what are you watching, my friend? well, we are watching this big arctic blast that s coming down. it is sub freezing temperatures the jet stream has dipped down to the south. and, so, these are the coldest temperatures we have seen in three years in parts of the northeast. and, in fact, overnight lows windchills of 2 in pittsburgh, minus 1 in new york city, 10 in d.c., minus 9 in chicago. the good news is this is very short lived. by the end of this week, we will see temperatures moderating a bit 41 in new york city. 46 in washington, d.c. 36 in chicago. we have also got windchills to talk about and lake effect snow this is a big band of lake effect snow coming across. it s going to bring some areas another 5 to 8 inches of snow on top of what s already fallen, lester we re talking two inches of snow per hour between watertown
fayetteville, arkansas, already, triggering a dangerous commute. and look at this along the i-95 corridor. crews out salting the roads. this is bucks county, pennsylvania, bracing for black ice to come after snow already today. and by tomorrow morning, the wind chill will be near zero in philadelphia and new york, 4 below zero in boston. senior meteorologist rob marciano leading us off tonight timing this all out for us. reporter: hi, david. you said it right there. the cold is going to be the most debilitating debilitating, widespread element of all of this, with half the country seeing temperatures 15 to 30 degrees below average. look at pittsburgh, minus 1. 3 in chill. minus 1 in st. louis. minus 24 in des moines. this sets the stage for icing across the south. in texas t, we have winter stor warnings from brownsville, texas, to virginia beach. moisture into the sub-freezing air, so, significant icing in
and in boston, massachusetts, about 17.5 inches of snow which is off of the 23.6 record. it is not much of a wind in that snowfall to create whiteout conditions. looking at the wind that we are dealing with. in wellfleet, massachusetts, it is 83 miles per hour, and those are hurricane-force winds, and in nantucket, you are dealing with the strong winds right now, and boston, it is picking up for you, and you have a ice band pushing over as well, and that is going to continue for you. and if you take the wind and combine it with the air term, it is feeling like it is minus 1 in boston and the temperatures will tumble from here, and we will continue to see the snowfall lift to the north, and it is tapering off where brian has been, and we will see it push to
