Proposed Bill Aims To Purge 2 3 Million New Yorkers Criminal Records

arrow Brooklyn State Senator Zellnor Myrie is sponsoring the “Clean Slate” law Next 100 Newly-proposed legislation aims to purge the criminal histories of approximately 2.3 million New York state residents with the hopes of improving access to housing and employment opportunities. The “Clean Slate” law, introduced by State Senator Zellnor Myrie and Assemblymember Catalina Cruz, would automatically seal and then expunge convictions for residents who have completed their sentences and probation, supervised release, and sex offender registration periods.  The bill would cover most types of crimes ranging from misdemeanors to felonies such as assaults, robberies, and even some murders though its benefits would not extend to those convicted of crimes which keep them permanently on the state’s sex offender registry.

Andrew Cuomo impeachment talks sparked by nursing home scandal

The resolution was introduced after 14 Senate Democrats joined Republicans in an effort to strip Mr. Cuomo of his emergency pandemic powers. Nine Assembly Democrats accused the governor in a letter Tuesday of “intentional obstruction of justice” and broaching “potentially the commencement of impeaching proceedings against Governor Cuomo.” Senate Minority Leader Robert G. Ortt, a Republican, said Thursday that each day brings “more erratic behavior and additional deception by a Cuomo administration that spirals out of control.” “I am grateful to see our repeated calls for a federal investigation have been answered,” Mr. Ortt said. “And if this investigation reveals deliberate obstruction, as I suspect it will, the Legislature must move toward impeachment.”

Assembly GOP leader calls for special session on nursing home scandal

Capitol Confidential By Edward McKinley on February 14, 2021 at 1:52 PM ALBANY The Legislature is supposed to have this week off, but Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay wants to change that, calling for a special session to address the alleged coverup of nursing home data by the administration of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo.  “The Legislature was not originally scheduled to reconvene this week. But we need to face reality, this is hardly an appropriate time for a break,” Barclay wrote in an emailed statement to reporters. “There is vocal, bipartisan support in both houses to finally end Gov. Cuomo’s emergency powers and restore the Legislature to a co-equal branch of government. Members of the Assembly and Senate Republican conferences have been calling for this for months. It should not have taken a national scandal to compel Democrats to take this overdue step, but it has never been more obvious that the time has arrived.”
