MVL 4th in Mankato East speech fest | News, Sports, Jobs

Mar 1, 2021 NEW ULM Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School had its best Speech meet of the season on Saturday, Feb. 27 when they participated in Mankato East High School’s Speech Fiesta. Bethany Spike and Estrella Strackbein earned 1st in novice Duo Interpretation, while Nicole Schumann and Emma Niebuhr earned 5th in varsity Duo Interpretation and Nick Pleiss and Andy Muske earned 4th. Emma Niebuhr also earned 1st place in Extemporaneous Reading, Joseph Schroeder earned 5th in Great Speeches (moving out of novice and into varsity), and Caleb Tomhave received 6th place in Original Oratory. All of the students who competed in the poetry competition went to finals, with Dora Grubbs receiving 4th place and Mary Niebuhr earning 2nd place in the novice division while Gracen Lukasek earned 4th and Maggie Spike came in 3rd in varsity. MVL came in 4th overall.

Feb 16, 2021 NEW ULM –The New Ulm Area Foundation is accepting applications for the Charlotte Raymond Anderson Teaching Scholarship. This $5,000 scholarship will be awarded annually to one student pledging their intent to attain the highest level of proficiency in teaching or an established educator pursuing a graduate degree to increase their expertise in teaching. The scholarship also carries potential of renewal for the recipient each year of college after being awarded the scholarship. The Charlotte Raymond Anderson Teaching Scholarship is available to 2021 high school graduates and past graduates from District 88, Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School and New Ulm Area Catholic Schools pursuing a college or graduate degree in education.

Feb 11, 2021 NEW ULM Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School (MVLHS) senior Jonah Kramer of Gibbon is a finalist in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Competition (NMSC). NMSC serves to recognize high school seniors for their academic achievements. In February, some 15,000 semifinalists, including Kramer, were notified that they have advanced to finalist standing. According to the NMSC website, all winners of Merit Scholarship awards are chosen from the finalist group based on their abilities, skills and accomplishments. NMSC evaluates the finalist’s academic record, information about the school’s curriculum and grading system, PSAT/NMSQT Selection Index score, the high school official’s written recommendation, information about the student’s activities and leadership and the finalist’s essay.

Feb 11, 2021 NEW ULM Ron Harper, age 76, of New Ulm, died on Friday, February 5, 2021 surrounded by his family. Due to current restrictions, a private family funeral will be held. To leave an online condolence for his family, please go to: mvfh.org Ron is survived by Sylvia, his loving wife of almost 52 years; daughter Jennifer (Paul) Kelm – grandchildren, Benjamin, Joshua, and Lydia Kelm; son Jason (Rachel) Harper grandchildren, Abigail, Caleb, Joseph, and David Harper; sister Judith Miller; nieces and a nephew; and many other relatives and friends. Ron was preceded in death by his parents. Ronald Hughes Harper was born on July 4, 1944 in Mankato, MN, to Claude and Elvira (Gross) Harper. He attended Immanuel Lutheran Grade School in Mankato and graduated from Mankato West High School. After graduating, he joined the Army and served his country for three years. On March 22, 1969, Ron was united in marriage to Sylvia Wolfe at First Ev. Lutheran Church in La Crosse, WI. T
