Why Delaware employers are struggling to fill jobs amid COVID

View Comments As more people get vaccinated and return to normal life, the economy is expected to bounce back thanks to demand for activities that were put on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic. But with that increase in demand, many businesses say they are struggling to hire workers. The phenomenon is essentially the reverse of a worker shortage, according to representatives in the Labor Department. There s still a plethora of jobless people to choose from, with more than 31,000 people still collecting unemployment from the state. But businesses with unfilled spots aren t able to find them. What we are hearing, of course, are a need for workers to fill unfilled jobs, said Rachel Turney, deputy secretary at the Department of Labor.

Gourmet pizza restaurant The Dough Bar expands with dine-in restaurant

There’s something familiar about a small town like Milton. The simple houses with ornate front porches, a pair of people fishing over a small stretch of silvery water, the wail of a fire truck rushing down narrow streets. A local bartender says the charms of the Sussex County town remind him of Mayberry, somewhere everyone knows your name. And that feeling continues right through the doors of Milton’s new restaurant, The Dough Bar. One of the owners, Kristen Latham, shouts “happy birthday” to a customer who came in for the second time that day. Earlier, another customer stuck her head in the door asking for the bartender by name.

First, their flagship restaurant Suburban Farmhouse closed after the building was sold, then their retail business, Speckled Roost, was lost in a fire. All the while, they were opening two new businesses, The Fox Hole and the Dough Bar, at the same location.
