MILLIS What is in a name?
The age-old question is one that is being debated in Millis as the school board considers whether the district will drop the name of the Mohawk people from its narrative.
On Tuesday night, the board heard opinions on the matter from various community members including past and present students, parents and teachers as part of a public forum held during its regular Zoom meeting.
Commentators were divided between two camps: One that feels the Mohawk name is about pride, respect and unity, and one that feels it is ultimately disrespectful of a culture to which Millis has no connection.

MILLIS Last month, the Cleveland Indians followed the Washington Football Team s lead and announced that they will be changing their name starting in 2022. It would be the first name change for the franchise since 1914, when the Cleveland franchise went by the Naps.
Could Millis High School be following suit and changing its nickname in the near future?
Over the summer, 2014 Millis High graduate Rebekah Kohls started a petition asking the Millis School Committee to retire the Mohawk mascot, which has been used for the school s sports teams since the school was established in 1960.
The petition asks for the School Committee to “retire, acknowledge and apologize for the use of the Mohawk as a mascot, name and any associated logos from the Millis Public School Systems.”
