Fort Jackson Pauses Giving Trainees Guns After School Bus Hijacking

COLUMBIA, S.C. The nation s largest Army basic training base will halt its weapons immersion training after a trainee escaped last week and hijacked a school bus with an unloaded weapon, a Fort Jackson spokesperson announced Thursday afternoon.
The base s commander, Brig. Gen. Milford Beagle Jr., met with other leadership at the base to, assess force protection, personnel accountability and other measures to prevent future incidents, according to a news release.

Officials at the Army’s Fort Jackson in South Carolina have suspended weapons immersion training a week after a trainee allegedly went AWOL with his unloaded rifle and hijacked a school bus.
The base is the largest basic training facility of the U.S. military, and weapons immersion training teaches recruits the fundamentals about using their firearms. We truly regret this incident and the effect it is having on our community, the base commander, Brig. Gen. Milford Beagle Jr., said in a statement. I have spoken with Dr. Davis, to express my desire to meet with the parents of the children so I can personally share my concerns for them. I want to answer their questions and let them know we are taking actions to prevent this from happening again.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott speaks at a news conference Thursday. (CNN)A Fort Jackson trainee is in custody after allegedly hijacking a school bus full of students on its way to Forest Lake Elementary School in Columbia, South Carolina, the Richland County sheriff said.
Sheriff Leon Lott called the incident a very scary situation, but said none of the 18 children on board the bus were injured. The driver was also uninjured. Probably one of the scariest calls we can get in law enforcement, and as a school district, is that a school bus has been hijacked with kids on it with someone with a gun. And that s what we had this morning, Lott told reporters at a news conference Thursday.
