for me personally, this is a really rough one. i am a beach person, grew up in the beach, am from this area, and so to see this happening in my back yard, it s devastating. but i also know that the we re going to do everything that we can to make this even better than it was before. reporter: and the spill happened about 4.5 miles offshore, and there are still efforts being made right now to identify the exact source of where that leak happened, how this happened. so in addition to the cleanup, there are divers down there trying to identify how this problem started and we ll still be asking questions throughout the day. absolutely. thank you very much. joining me now for more is brad avery, mayor of newport beach, california, which is in orange county. actually saw newport on that map that we were showing you during natasha s live shot. mayor, thank you for being here. i read that you were actually out on your own boat on saturday
now. erin, what s the latest? reporter: hey, stephanie, well, beta offshore, the company responsible for the pipeline in question, says it s still searching for the source of the oil leak. they were searching with a team of divers throughout the day yesterday. they believe the leak is about 4.5 miles offshore, but the pipeline is located 100 feet below the surface of the water, complicating efforts. that said, they say they have managed to shut the pipeline down and suction it off, however, local officials say the damage has already been done, some 126,000 gallons of oil released into the ocean, and it s a damage that the company appears to have been aware was a possibility, according to a report that nbc has obtained a copy of dated to 2012. they were calling this a worst-case scenario, an oil leak in this area of that size,

elly. we just don t know where exactly that breach is on that pipeline. is it two miles offshore, five miles? we do know the platform itself, this compound, if you will, is a good 8.6 miles offshore. any way we look at it, it is sliding towards the coastline. it will expand in its length because it is less dense than raw crude, possibly even making its way as far south to laguna beach. terrible, terrible situation. it is a serious situation. i want to go back to natasha chen as we await the press conference from the coast guard. what are some of the unanswered questions at this point? this is not under control. the big question is how soon can they get it under control? having covered some of these things, sometimes they don t know the answer to that. reporter: that s right. i think that s one of the main issues that is unresolved right now. another question of course as time goes on and as they
surprise us, dolphins do this all the time. they are amazing, 2014 they saved a swimmer from a great white shark, they saved four swimmers from a great white shark, the navy uses them as their bodies. there is a whole list of people who use dolphins in an asset to multiply her way and these guys are super sweet. so i say this is not miraculous it is to be expected, but i think that the lesson is if you are swimming 5 miles offshore, tell somebody where you re going and when you are expected back. tammy: then humans might help you. this is great, thank you very much and i love with the vault demand dolphins if the military is using them, and want them to be willing and come back if they want to come i don t want to them to be forced, obviy to say the least. that would be my concern. they like it. tammy: okay, good, and we like them. thank you, everybody. and thank you for watching fox news primetime. it s a very difficult time. you are not alone.
