上の湯は1984年、先代の笹倉幸一さんが親族から経営を継ぎ、妻の文子さん（77）と二人三脚で切り盛りしてきた。はっきりした時期は不明だが、過去に経営していた親族の話から、戦前には創業していたという。
その幸一さんが今年2月13日、自宅前で転倒し、背中や足を骨折。急きょ休業することになった。
春が来ても病状は回復しなかった。孫娘の美紅（みく）さん（26）の車で病院に赴くと、医師から「元の仕事には戻れない」と見通しを伝えられた。2人の子どもにも後を継いでもらうことは望めない。ひそかに銭湯をたたむことを決意した。
病院から帰途の車内。美紅さんの口から思いがけない言葉がついて出た。「私たちがやってもいいかな」
