GRAND FORKS, N.D.– University of North Dakota junior starting goalie
Adam Scheel has been named to the Mike Richter Award Watch List, announced Tuesday. He is one of five NCHC goaltenders on the initial list for the top goalie in college hockey and one of 35 in the country after a smashing start to his 2020-21 season.
The Lakewood, Ohio product has five wins over nationally-ranked opponents this season and his 12 wins for the year rank second in the NCAA. He sports a 1.99 goals against average and a .927 save percentage for the year with a sparkling 12-3-1 record in net. He’s added three shutouts to his resume this season and has allowed one goal or fewer in seven of his 16 starts, including five in the month of January alone.
The Chicago Blackhawks continue to get points in the standings, even if wins are not piling up. After dropping their first three games of the season in regulation, the Blackhawks have at least one point in seven of their last eight games. The Carolina Hurricanes at the top of the Central Division and the Blackhawks in sixth-place are separated by just two points so far this season, but based on points percentage it’s a much wider gap.
The top-four teams in each division go to the postseason and currently the fourth-place team in the Central, the Tampa Bay Lightning, has a .786 points percentage. Compare that to the Blackhawks’ .455 points percentage in sixth-place and you can figure that the playoffs are still not in the future for Chicago.
