The UK government has proposed placing electronic tags on some asylum seekers who arrive by small boat over the Channel. The pilot scheme, says the Prime Minister, will stop them from "vanishing into the rest of the country."
More than 800 people rescued from the Mediterranean by three private ships were waiting to disembark on Monday. Other migrants were brought ashore in Italy at the weekend, as Alarm Phone warned a boat carrying around 30 was in distress and another was missing.
One migrant is still missing and at least four people have died after a migrant boat capsized off the southern coast of Spain on Wednesday. At least 12 people survived the shipwreck. They were rescued by a nearby merchant ship and the emergency services.
More than forty people were reportedly rescued from sinking boats off the Aegean island of Rhodes at the weekend. A blind girl was among the migrants in one inflatable dinghy.
The Spanish rescue organization Open Arms’ sailing boat Astral set out on its 91st mission earlier this week. Already, it has located more than 100 migrants and transferred them to the Italian coast guard’s care.
