AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) - The Middle River Regional Jail Authority Board held its quarterly meeting on Tuesday. The board held off a vote for possible expansion in order to give more local officials time for input.
The meeting started off with Stephen King, chairman of the board, addressing those in attendance saying there would be no action taken on potential projects or expansion.
“There’s not a single member of this Middle River Jail Board who wants to do an addition or expansion,” King said after the meeting. “We don’t want to, there’s no desire to do that but the reality is what’s driving what we feel compelled to do at some point. We are all in favor of doing the alternative programs we can that can reduce numbers.”
VERONA It was time for a shift change Monday evening at the Middle River Regional Jail. A trail of cars filtered out of the road as staff headed home to beat sundown, but they had to pump the brakes on their way out and drive a little slower.
A crowd of about 70 people had lined the side of the road to gather and peacefully protest the possible expansion of Middle River Regional Jail, one day before the Middle River Regional Jail Authority Board votes on the structure of the expansion proposal on April 6.
A handful of people spoke before the crowd. Behind them, the roof of the jail peeked out from behind the hill.
