ATLANTA (AP) Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has set June 15 special elections to replace two Republican state House members who have resigned.
Greg Morris of Vidalia resigned from District 156, which covers all of Montgomery and Toombs counties and parts of Appling and Jefferson Davis counties after fellow lawmakers elected him to the state Transportation Board. Bert Reeves of Marietta resigned from House District 34, which covers parts of central and northern Cobb County, to go to work for Georgia Tech.
In the last few weeks, multiple candidates have said they would be interested in running for Georgia House District 165, which encompasses much of the east side of Savannah.
For years, the seat has been held by Mickey Stephens, who has been sidelined by illness since 2019.
So what s happening in District 165? Here s what we know.
Stephens has not officially retired
Stephens returned to the Georgia Capitol on March 31 after being kept mostly homebound since falling ill in 2019. There, Gloria Stephens, his wife of over 50 years, gave a heartfelt thank you to his colleagues for their support.
Stephens has not yet sent a resignation letter to Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, however.

A prominent Republican is leaving the state House to become a Georgia Tech administrator.
The school announced Thursday that it is hiring Rep. Bert Reeves of Marietta to be its vice president of institute relations.
Reeves, first elected to represent a Cobb County district in 2014, has been a floor leader for Gov. Brian Kemp, meaning he advocates for bills that Kemp supports.
