SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A Chatham County Board of Elections member has announced he will run for a Georgia state House of Representative seat when there is a special election.
Antwan Lang said he plans to run for the District 165 seat. The seat is currently held by Rep. Mickey Stephens.
Rep. Stephens has been dealing with health issues for the past several years. His wife, Gloria, spoke on the final day of the Georgia Legislative Session in March to thank his colleagues for their support.
Georgia House Rep. Mickey Stephens, D-Savannah, has formally retired after illness sidelined him since 2019.
Stephens returned to Atlanta after being kept mostly homebound for the last couple of years. He won re-election in November despite this. And on March 31, his wife of over 50 years, Gloria Stephens, delivered goodbye remarks on his behalf at the chamber of the House of Representatives.
“We are eternally grateful for this opportunity this morning to personally thank you for your immeasurable support,” Gloria Stephens said. “The efficacious prayers and the tons of care and love we have inspirationally felt each and every day of Mickey s illness. We just had to say, in person, thank you.”

Georgia House Bill 168, introduced by local lawmaker Jesse Petrea and passed by the House last month, is meant to assist prosecutors in challenging the early release of violent felons.
The bill, now being considered by the Senate, is specific to the worst of the worst, such as murderers, rapists, child molesters, kidnappers the criminals that Cook Jones and her colleagues spend so much time and energy to put behind bars.
