How the Colchester Council election night unfolded

Next stage of 80 apartment The Edge at Abbey Park development to launch

AN set of ex-army flats in Colchester is being transformed into 80 apartments across four new blocks. Developer Harding Homes The Edge at Abbey Park scheme is now up and running, with the first two phases sold out since launching in February. The third phase will be ready in June or July, and are coming to the market soon. Charlotte Coleman, director of Fine & Country Colchester, said: There is high demand for property within the development which is due to be complete in either June or July this year. Apart from the aesthetic design, beautiful interiors and excellent location, another drawcard to the development is the developers incentive for NHS staff and the armed forces, as well as the fact the new-build apartments have help to buy on them, making it easier for buyers to get their foot on the property ladder.

Campaigners speak out to defend Middlewick Ranges from homes

CAMPAIGNERS and councillors have hit out at plans for 1,000 new homes at a beauty spot. The Defence Infrastructure Organisation’s plans for the new estate at Middlewick Ranges were discussed during an examination of Colchester Council’s Local Plan. Inspector Jameson Bridgwater was addressed on the issues relating to the controversial development by campaigners and councillors opposed to the plans. The MoD will sell The Wick for development after 2022 when firing operations move to Fingringhoe whilst Colchester Council has included the site in its Local Plan. Sir Bob Russell, Colchester High Steward, said sadly “the horse had bolted” over homes being built at The Wick.

Elections May 2021: The seven key seats in Colchester Council elections

AS we approach May s election, control of Colchester Council is teetering on a knife-edge. The town hall is controlled by a coalition of Labour and the Lib Dems, who together hold 24 seats. There are 51 seats in the borough, meaning the coalition is technically a minority administration. The Highwoods Independents were part of what was then called the rainbow alliance , but 18 months ago they packed their bags. Support is now on a vote by vote basis, meaning there are some crunch votes on contentious issues. The Conservative Group are the largest group on the council, holding 21 seats. In May they need to secure an additional five, as well as hold all of their existing ones, to hold an overall majority.
