With support from our Comcast Cable partners this weekend we travel to lansing michigan. Coming up we will talk with authors base year as we first learn how the city was chosen as the state capital and then about 15 minutes the story of arby olds and the auto Company Founded in lansing and later we take a driving tour of the citys downtown. We begin our special feature as we hear about james turner and the founding of lansing. James turner was a pioneer. It wasnt until the state legislature designated this area that he came with these other folks and helped build the capital. He had a slightly more sensible approach, but we didnt do that. Wehad nothing here, there was no transportation. They had so much to build a castle city and that was the very interested and exciting and unique story oflansings beginning. The legislature established the state in about 1836, about a year before it became a state. They designated detroit as the capital but they were fearful that detroit could be easi
2020th election, and more. A full schedule is available on our website. Now were going to go inside for the first conversation. This is live coverage on tv on cspan2. Good morning, everyone. I am michael cahill. It has been my pleasure and privilege to serve as dean here at Brooklyn Law School for just about three months now. Its going really well. [laughter] and, of course, i am happy to welcome all of you here and to welcome those of you watching at home on cspan. We are here, of course, as part of the 14th annual brooklyn book festival which will draw tens of thousands of people to downtown brooklyn over the course of the day, several thousand of those people will be passing through here at Brooklyn Law School where we have been a proud partner of the book festival since 2012. Welcome to this hearing on the subcommittee on antitrust policy and consumer rights. Today we are pleased to have with us the chairman of the federal trade commission, joseph simons, and the assistant attorney general for the antitrust division at the department of justice, makan delrahim. Welcome to both of you. As an initial matter, as a matter of housekeeping, we have been informed we may have a block of more votes starting about an hour from now. The practical matter, we may be able to push it to an hour and a half from now, but before we hit the recess at some point we will likely have to go to recess to cast a few votes. We will have to play some of that by ear. I apologize in advance. Theres no way to predict these in advance. It does seem to be an uncanny event, with antitrust subcommittee hearings. It seems to be a good predictor, albeit an unintentional predictor of when votes are going to occur. As both of you know, ive been critical of the fact that we have two federal agen
Good morning. Good morning. The committee will come to order. Today were considering the nomination of Eugene Scalia. Let me say before i begin my Opening Statement that we welcome the secretary, good to see you. And we welcome mr. Scalias family. Well give him a chance to introduce all of them a little later. Theres so many of them and i wont the scalias are a productive family, apparently, so we wont come off any of your allotted time for your statement and i would say to the family members that the confirmation hearings arent necessarily a family exercise. I was before this committee myself to be nominated for education secretary and was grilled pretty heavily, i thought, with my family sitting right behind me. I was accustomed to it, but they werent. But they got over it before very long. We welcome you here and were glad youre here. Yesterday i received a letter from senator murray asking me to delays todays hearings. I think the Committee Members know, i do my best to do what sen
President ial obstruction of justice and abuse of power. Before we begin, i would remind all Committee Members that we should refrain from making inappropriate personal references to protected parties, namely the president , Vice President , members of the senate and house. This includes accusations of dishonesty, criminality, treason or other unethical motives. The issues we are addressing today go to the very core of our constitutional democracy, they understandably bring out strong passion in us, as they do in the American People. I hope that what should be a spirited discussion of these issues today, we will stay focused on the issues and take care to prevent our comments from being directed personally at the president. I will now recognize myself for an Opening Statement. Todays hearing is entitled president ial obstruction of justice and abuse of power. This hearing is the first one form only designated under the Committee Procedures adopted last week in connection with their inv
