COPENHAGEN) - Denmark will reintroduce permanent customs controls at its borders despite strident criticism from Brussels and its neighbours, a parliamentary committee ruled Friday.
The Danish parliament s finance committee passed the government s controversial plan as expected with its nine government members overruling the eight opposition MPs on the committee making it binding.
Following the committee s vote, Danish Treasury Minister Peter Christensen announced 50 border guards would be deployed as of Tuesday at Denmark s frontiers with Sweden and Germany.
The permanent facilities envisaged in the government s 270-million-kroner (36-million-euro, $52-million) plan would however not be completely in place before 2014, he told reporters, adding that 48 more officers would be deployed in the new year.
