This Memorial Day, you can pay tribute to veterans while toasting their service with a locally brewed craft beer.
A group of Pennsylvania brewery owners and former military service members have created an IPA named Adapt and Overcome.
The limited-edition beer will be sold starting Friday at 20 Keystone State breweries.
Proceeds will benefit the Pennsylvania Veterans Foundation, which provides aid to veterans and their families.
The project was spearheaded by Chadd Balbi, co-owner of the popular brewery website Breweries of Pennsylvania. Balbi asked Cory McDonald, head brewer at 2nd Story Brewing Co.in Philadelphia and David Kozloski, co-owner of Gearhouse Brewing in Chambersburg, to come up with the recipe.
Pennsylvania has plenty of breweries, but not a lot of hops. So a professor, a farmer and a brewer have teamed up to change that.
Alison Feeney, a geography professor at Shippensburg University, has been studying the local craft beer industry for 10 years, but it didnât take that long to realize that Pennsylvania is short on the key ingredient for beerâs aroma and flavor.
Most hops used in local brews are grown out of state, shipped from Oregon, Washington, Idaho or Germany.
âIn the last decade, weâve had small farmers kind of pop up here and there,â Feeney said. âIt is challenging to grow commercially and compete with those global markets.â
