Library many years ago to work on the book, a staff come up to me and say to me, unsolicited, do you know that so and so was here, so and so and listing all the famous historians but then they said to me, you know who our favorite is . David mccullough he was here and he was the nicest and said to this me. He was appreciative. Im enjoying the stories. So what i did was that night before i came in the next day to finish my research, i went out and bought doughnuts for the staff figuring they might Say Something about me. Not in the same breath as David Mccullough but in that respect. One other thing, i think we would all agree and its without question that David Mccullough is the most celebrated, revered historian of our times. Hes a National Treasure. [ applause ] hes a National Treasure not only the president ial medal of freedom and multiple pulitzers, National Book aday and as gay said, too many awards to announce. Landscape of slavery. You had come up this mountaintop in jeffersons time, the fist thing you would have seen most likely would have ben enslaved people. There would have been no place on this mountaintop that slavery was not visible. And we want to restore that, make that known to visitors who come here today. [ construction noise ]. So were now in the middle of recreating or restoring dwellings along the main plantation street as well as rooms attached to the house just behind us. So all of this is an effort to sort of shift the focus away from just jefferson and talk about the dozens of other people who essentially made his life possible. Right now were actually just near jeffersons main house, the mansion that he built throughout his life. And were standing next to mulberry row, the main plantation street at monticello. 1300 feet. We know that over 20 workshops, storehouses and dwellings line this street. They were enslaved families here, there were servants, hired white artisans.

And most importantly, id like to thank dr. Cheney for coming here and sharing her views on president and mrs. Madison. Thank you. Okay. Well revisit a couple the issues that discussed. Lets jump right into your writing style. Tell us a little bit about how you pick your topics and how you approach the research process. Well, during the writing of the book madison, i was entranced with the notion as gay pointed out that for the first 36 years of the republic, the virginians were in charge for 32. And i was interested not only in how this came about and thats a good story, but in the interaction between them and the personal interactions. I wont give away too much. But there are some surprises there. Yeah. And how i write. You know, i was teacher of freshman english for quite a while. I was getting my phd. And i jus
