Over 200 employees of Lafourche will remain civil servants after a proposal to eliminate the Civil Service Department was discussed, and then withdrawn at the meeting of the parish council Tuesday.
The Civil Service Department, one of about 20 in the state, was created in the 1980s to allow employees of the Parish to do their jobs without political pressure or influence. Civil Service employees cannot work on political campaigns or be hired or fired by the parish president or council.
