Report outlines complaints, retaliation at APD academy

The cadet class of 2020 was embroiled in numerous complaints of harassment and discrimination. Or, in the case of the Albuquerque Police Department Academy, it’s not the 32-plus allegations of harassment and discrimination, it’s the retaliation against those who made the complaints. ...................... A wide ranging external investigation into more than two-dozen complaints from cadets and former employees at the police academy found that while almost all the allegations could not be confirmed or that the conduct did occur but resulted in discipline, the actions former Cmdr. Angela Byrd took to address them were retaliatory and against standard operating procedur

A scenic overlook that was a real scene. A Cowboys for Trump-er sticking his boot in his mouth — more than once. A trombone shortage within the university marching band. The mayor of Albuquerque going “incognito.” No, we’re not in uncharted waters here — not as New Mexico goes. • Transition some services from police to other agencies in a new Community Safety Department. • And oversee a Fire Rescue department that seems to be functioning just fine, thank you. If the Keller administration has a plan for how this would work and why it’s needed, it hasn’t done much to share that information. In fact it came as a surprise to some Albuquerque city councilors when they learned last week the city had posted a job description for the new position. Council President Pat Davis hadn’t heard about the proposal – although he’s not necessarily opposed. “I think we need to do whatever it takes to get this train back on track. It’s got to be the right person who understands policing and won’t get cannibalized by APD’s culture.”

.... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... The Albuquerque Police Department has taken it on the chin. A lot. From botched homicide investigations, to its timid response to the Oñate statue debacle, to infighting leading up to the ouster of chief Michael Geier, and what the monitor overseeing APD reforms describes as an effort on the brink of catastrophic failure, 2020 has been a tough year for APD. But against that backdrop of problems – most not related to the officers who actually patrol the streets and answer calls – it only seems fair to take a moment to recognize the good police work being done on the dangerous streets of Albuquerque. Work that makes each of us safer.

City seeking to hire chief of public safety

Copyright © 2020 Albuquerque Journal The city of Albuquerque is looking to hire a chief of public safety who would oversee the chiefs of the police department, the fire department and the office of emergency management. According to a job posting on the city’s website, in addition to overseeing the three department heads, the new hire “must coordinate with the Chief of Police to provide strong reform-minded leadership as the department works to achieve and maintain compliance” with the Court Approved Settlement Agreement dictating the police reform effort. The city is in the midst of a yearslong reform effort after the Department of Justice announced in 2014 that an investigation found officers have a pattern and practice of using excessive force. The most recent reports and hearings on the undertaking have been highly critical. The city has replaced its police chief and vowed to turn things around.
