Collectively the men in charge were, quote, those inhuman monsters, he wrote in his diary, after hearing of the plight. Individually, however, soviet leaders were adversaries, not enemies. And reagan wanted to negotiate with them. He wanted, from the very start, to negotiate with them. In january of 1983, in discussing some of the arms negotiations with the soviets, he wrote in his diary, found i was wishing i could do the negotiating with the soviets. They cant be any tougher than Frank Freeman and harry cohen, the respective heads of paramount studios and columbia pictures. So, let me briefly summarize three examples of reagan engaging his cold war adversaries. And the first is, you know, still a somewhat surprising story of reagan and pregorbachev soviet leaders. For more than five years, reagan wrote in his memoir, recalling the year 1985, id made little progress with my efforts at quiet diplomacy. For one thing, the soviets, soviet leaders kept dying on me.
