New Funding Will Keep Battlefords Emergency Shelter Open for at Least the Summer

By Brad Jennings The Lighthouse Emergency Shelter in North Battleford will stay open until at least September. That from Executive Director Don Windels who says Metis Nation – Saskatchewan funding will keep their doors open, but he doesn’t want to get to the end of September and have to go through this process again. Windels wants to have funding in place prior to that time, and the Lighthouse will be seeking community commitment, as well as provincial and federal support. Windels states Saskatchewan is the only province that doesn’t have core funding for shelters. He says it would be good if the province could get the federal government involved as the Lighthouse supports a lot of Indigenous individuals and some of them fall under federal jurisdiction.

MN-S to Provide Funding for Battlefords Lighthouse Emergency Shelter

By Brad Jennings Mar 6, 2021 7:18 AM The Metis Nation Saskatchewan (MN-S) says it will be stepping in to provide funding to the North Battleford Lighthouse Supported Living emergency shelter. Recently the shelter was to close its doors after the Provincial Metis Housing Corporation decided to switch their funding to programs in the far north. MN-S Housing Minister, Ryan Carriere, says the homeless are the most susceptible when it comes to COVID-19 and with no other apparent homeless shelters in the Battleford region, MN–S will take up the challenge and fund the 37-bed facility. He says discussions are also underway to determine a path toward more substantial, community funding partners that could see a shelter operate indefinitely.
