Frustration in Egypt as Cairo hotel gang rape case is shelved

Frustration in Egypt as Cairo hotel gang rape case is shelved Reuters 2 hrs ago By Menna A. Farouk CAIRO, May 12 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Egyptians said on Wednesday that attitudes towards women need to change to end sexual violence in the north African country, after a high-profile gang rape case was shelved. Public prosecutors on Tuesday freed four suspects in a case involving a woman who said she was drugged and raped in 2014 at the Fairmont Hotel in the capital, Cairo, as evidence amassed during nearly nine months of investigation was insufficient. The problem is not only with the law, but it is mainly with social attitudes towards women, said Entessar El-Saeed, director of the Cairo Foundation for Development and Law, pointing to the fact that marital rape is not a crime in Egypt.

Egypt toughens penalties for FGM; activists remain sceptical

4 Min Read CAIRO, April 26 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Egypt has toughened penalties for female genital mutilation (FGM), imposing prison terms of up to 20 years in a push to end the ancient practice. It is the second time Egypt’s parliament has cracked down on FGM - which typically involves the removal of a girl’s external genitalia - but activists remain sceptical about enforcement in a country where cutting is deep-rooted and widespread. “It’s fantastic news that Egypt has strengthened its law on FGM again. However, unless the government takes it seriously this time, nothing is likely to change,” Brendan Wynne, co-founder of The Five Foundation advocacy group, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation on Monday.
