CAIRO, Jan 12 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - An Egyptian court on Tuesday ruled in favour of two female TikTok stars who were jailed last year for accounts that were found to violate family morals and for posting indecent videos.
Social media influencer Haneen Hossam, 20, was acquitted after being jailed for encouraging women to broadcast videos in exchange for money, while Mawada Eladham’s two-year sentence for publishing indecent photos and videos was cancelled.
Hossam’s lawyer Hussein El Bakar told the Thomson Reuters Foundation that the TikTok star, who is a student at Cairo University, fainted on hearing the verdict.

ESNA, Egypt, Jan 5 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Lekaa El Kholy s father used to rub a little blackened engine oil onto her face and tell her to wear overalls when they went to the Egyptian city of Luxor to buy supplies for his car repair workshop.
It was his way of showing people his daughter was a mechanic just like him, and of confronting deep-rooted beliefs about gender roles that keep all but a few women out of traditionally male professions in socially conservative Egypt.
Today, El Kholy, 24, has been fixing cars for more than a decade in the village of Esna and has captured national attention - with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi hailing her as the Upper Egypt region s first female motor mechanic.

CAIRO, Dec 22 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - On a busy street corner in the Egyptian city of Alexandria, an open-air training camp for female weightlifters has been inspiring women to reach the top of the sport for two decades - smashing taboos in the process.
It also inspired Egyptian filmmaker Mayye Zayed to spotlight women s success in the male-dominated sport in Lift Like a Girl , a documentary that has won acclaim at international film festivals in recent months.
Zayed said she hoped her film would raise awareness about weightlifting among women and girls, and encourage more to follow their dreams - even if that means challenging gender stereotypes in socially conservative countries like Egypt.
