Man and Dog fall through ice on Lake Mendota

March 7, 2021 Studstill Media File Photo MENDOTA – A dog and his owner both went through the ice on Lake Mendota Sunday. Around noon the Mendota Fire Department and Mendota Police were called to the south side of the lake for a report of a man and a dog who had both ended up in the water. When authorities arrived, both had made it to shore on their own. According to Mendota Fire Chief Dennis Rutishauser the dog had apparently ran out onto the ice to harass the geese when it fell into the water. No injuries were reported. Local Weather

California Man Indicted for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon in Aid of Racketeering Published: 27 February 2021 Fresno, California - A federal grand jury returned a two-count indictment Thursday against Oscar Armando Orellana Guevara, 23, of Mendota, charging him with assault with a dangerous weapon in aid of racketeering and conspiracy to commit assault with a dangerous weapon in aid of racketeering, U.S. Attorney McGregor W. Scott announced. According to court documents, on Aug. 28, 2020, Guevara and others assaulted a man by punching, kicking and stabbing him with a straight-blade knife. They stabbed him in his chest, thigh, abdomen, and arm. During the confrontation, Guevara announced the group’s affiliation with Mara Salvatrucha or MS-13 and threatened to kill him and a companion. The assault occurred in and around an area of Mendota over which MS-13 claims control, and before assaulting him, Guevara and others told the victim he could not be there.

Mendota swears in new part-time police officer

February 16, 2021 Photo Mendota Police Department MENDOTA – An accomplished marksman has joined the ranks of the Mendota Police Department.   On Monday Brandon Hornung was sworn in as a part-time officer.    He recently graduated the Law Enforcement Training Advisory Committee Academy in Springfield in September and is currently in his final stages of field training.   Hornung is a 2005 graduate of Mendota High School and joined the National Guard in 2008 and served in the guard until 2020 where he retired at the rank of Staff Sergeant.  While in the National Guard,  Hornung was assigned to the Charlie Batter 2nd Battalion 123rd Field Artillery regiment.  During his tour of duty, he was deployed to both Egypt and Kuwait. Hornung was one of eight soldiers assigned as State Marksmanship Firearms Instructor.   He was awarded four Army achievement medals, three army commendations medals and one Meritorious Service Medal.
