MENDOTA – The driver of a van was life-flighted with serious injuries after reportedly striking two different Illinois Department of Transportation trucks on I-39 on Thursday. Around 10 AM Mendota and Troy Grove Fire Departments were called to the southbound lanes near the US Route 34 exit for a crash with entrapment. The van had allegedly struck the rear of one IDOT truck, hitting the attached attenuator, then proceeded to hit another IDOT truck and attached asphalt trailer. LaSalle Fire Department assisted in the crash, and no injuries to state workers or first responders was reported. The crash remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police.

MENDOTA – Two commanding officers of the Mendota Police Department have completed additional training programs. Deputy Chief Tyler Kent and Sergeant Amy Mann took the 100 hours of ‘Police Mid-Management Role in the 21 Century’ class from the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. They started their training in December and graduated in February, with on line classes being held twice a week for 8 hours each session.

MENDOTA – An accomplished marksman has joined the ranks of the Mendota Police Department. On Monday Brandon Hornung was sworn in as a part-time officer. He recently graduated the Law Enforcement Training Advisory Committee Academy in Springfield in September and is currently in his final stages of field training. Hornung is a 2005 graduate of Mendota High School and joined the National Guard in 2008 and served in the guard until 2020 where he retired at the rank of Staff Sergeant. While in the National Guard, Hornung was assigned to the Charlie Batter 2nd Battalion 123rd Field Artillery regiment. During his tour of duty, he was deployed to both Egypt and Kuwait. Hornung was one of eight soldiers assigned as State Marksmanship Firearms Instructor. He was awarded four Army achievement medals, three army commendations medals and one Meritorious Service Medal.
