NATIONAL NEWS - It is not yet clear how much history South Africa lost in a series of runaway fires on Cape Town’s Table Mountain National Park at the weekend.
These buildings were of provincial and national importance and housed countless untold stories, educational material, artefacts and priceless trinkets.

Western Cape education spokesperson Elijah Moholola was not able to say exactly which parts of the 116-year-old UCT Jagger library building had been damaged, but UCT Library executive director Ujala Satgoor on Sunday said in a statement the reading room of the library was completely gutted.

Cape Town - Vredehoek residents in the City Bowl began evacuating their homes early this morning as strong winds picked up at about 2am and keep fanning a fire that started at about 8.45am yesterday and has razed iconic Cape Town landmarks.
City of Cape Town Disaster Risk Management spokesperson Charlotte Powell confirmed that evacuations were under way, with Fire and Rescue vehicles on the scene as the wind speed is predicted to increase throughout the morning. In Vredehoek, Chelmsford Road and Pepper Tree Road have been closed as well as Tafelberg Road, said the City’s Traffic Services spokesperson, Maxine Bezuidenhout.

University of Cape Town Student Describes Fire as Apocalyptic, Like a Scene From a Movie

A student at the University of Cape Town (UCT) recently called the fires that have ravaged the city apocalyptic and compared them to a scene from a movie.
While speaking with News 24 in South Africa, Mathew Field, an economics student at the University of Cape Town said the fires were apocalyptic, like a scene from a movie. Students were on campus studying for tests, while others were sleeping at [the residences] when suddenly the sky turned gray and red, Field told News24.
