UCT scrambles to recover valuable material lost in library fire By Sisonke Mlamla Share Cape Town - The UCT community, including the alumni, have urged researchers around the world who have photocopies or images of documents destroyed in the Jagger Library fire to contribute those to help recover some of the lost records. Dr Maha Rafi Atal, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Copenhagen Business School in Frederiksberg, Denmark, took an initiative to establish a registry of copies of materials that researchers have among their research collections. Atal, who is collecting the information online, said in light of the fire at UCT on Sunday, academics and other researchers around the world who have worked in those special collections and have taken photocopies or mobile phone images of documents may be able to contribute those to help recover some of the lost records.

Cape Town fire: Worst tragedy for intellectual records at UCT library

A runaway veld fire in Cape Town has left devastating destruction in its wake, including the obliteration of intellectual property containing records of African Studies that “can never be replaced”. The University of Cape Town (UCT) African Studies Library and several other buildings were destroyed in Cape Town on Sunday. Thousands of students have since been evacuated from the UCT campus as firefighters continue to battle the blaze. “The African Studies section of UCT’s Main Library is on fire. Some of the oldest and rarest books about Africa were stored here. Cape Town fire: Blade Nzimande saddened after African Studies Library goes up in flames

Supplied The fire is said to be currently contained, however authorities are monitoring the situation. Nzimande is saddened that the fire destroyed, among other things, the iconic African Studies Library, the memorial restaurant, and the UCT s upper campus where boarding students reside. Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Blade Nzimande on Monday welcomed the swift response of the emergency services and the South African National Parks (SANParks) in containing the Cape Town fire. The City of Cape Town s Disaster Risk Management teams say the runaway veldfire on Table Mountain is currently contained. However, they are closely monitoring the situation, News24 reported.
