The Iowa DOT has been working on getting a mobile ID program up and running for several years. IDOT plans to roll out a pilot program for digital IDs by the end of the year. It was previously tested in 2016. With this program, people would still get a physical license or ID in the mail, but they could download an app so to view their card and change their information right on their phone.

By Jason Taylor May 17, 2021 AMES, Iowa - You ll be able to have a your driver s license on your smart phone in Iowa at some point in the future. The state hopes to have a pilot program for what will be called mobile ID up and running by the end of the year. Mobile IDs will become more widespread once the International Standards Organization finalizes rules to govern their use. Once that hurdle is passed, people will then be able to board an airline flight using their phone. According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, the process of obtaining a Mobile ID will involve downloading the app, scanning a physical ID and taking a selfie.
