Michelle Obama Responds to WSJ s Dr Jill Biden Op-Ed

Over the weekend, the Wall Street Journal published an op-ed by Joseph Epstein titled Is There a Doctor in the White House? Not if You Need an M.D., where Epstein called for incoming First Lady Dr. Jill Biden to drop her Dr. title. The piece was roundly criticized on social media for being misogynistic and has now gotten a response from former First Lady Michelle Obama, who called Epstein s request out for what it is: sexist. For context, the first sentence of Epstein s piece alone is patronizing and dismissive, with Epstein writing, Madame First Lady Mrs. Biden Jill kiddo: a bit of advice on what may seem like a small but I think is a not unimportant matter. Any chance you might drop the Dr. before your name? Dr. Jill Biden sounds and feels fraudulent, not to say a touch comic. Your degree is, I believe, an Ed.D., a doctor of education, earned at the University of Delaware through a dissertation with the unpromising title Student Retention at the Community College Level:

That s Dr Biden to you!

That’s Dr. Biden to you! You call a professional what that person wants to be called. End of discussion. As soon as I got my degree, some of my congregants asked me: “Does this mean we have to call you ‘Doctor’ now?” My response: “No, thanks. ‘Rabbi’ is sufficient.”

People show support for Jill Biden, #MyTitleIsDr trends after column

Her name is Dr. Jill Biden. Misogyny cannot diminish her accomplishments as a teacher, a mother, an advocate for military families and as Second Lady. Her work has inspired women of all ages and I’m confident she’ll continue to do so as our First Lady. We’re with you. The GOP is out here worried about @DrBiden calling herself ‘Doctor’ even though she has an earned doctorate from an accredited institution, yet they had no problem with @MELANIATRUMP LYING about having a degree in architecture from the Univ of Slovenia.#BenShapiro#DrJillBiden To get my PhD, I did 13 years of post high school education. That’s a lot of years of cheap ramen noodles. 9 of those years I was raising my daughter. It takes hard work and sacrifice to earn the title. #DrJillBiden

Balancing Act: We didn’t just hate the Dr. Jill Biden op-ed for its condescension. We hated it for its contempt for educators Heidi Stevens, Chicago Tribune © DNCC/Getty Images North America/TNS In a screenshot from the livestream of the Democratic National Convention, Dr. Lola Burnham, one of my favorite journalism professors from my four years at Eastern Illinois University, wasn’t the first person to share her righteous indignation over the Wall Street Journal’s Dr. Jill Biden op-ed. And she won’t be the last. But Burnham raised some crucial points about the piece that shouldn’t be glossed over before we move along from this particular absurdity.
