The death toll in the state rose to 12,993 after 136 more people succumbed to COVID-19 infection on Friday, the state health department bulletin said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee s younger brother Ashim Banerjee died due to COVID-19 on Saturday (May 15, 2021).
According to the reports, Ashim Banerjee was undergoing treatment for COVID-19 at Medica Hospital in Kolkata. The Chief Minister s brother had tested positive for COVID-19 and was undergoing treatment, Dr Alok Roy, Chairman, Medica Superspecialty Hospital in Kolkata informed.

NEW DELHI: An alarming rise in the deadly fungal disease mucormycosis, in patients who have recovered from Covid-19 in several states, has prompted the Centre to take steps for ramping up the production of amphotericinB, an injectable medicine used to treat the condition.

A 40-year-old Jamshedpur woman died of Covid-induced mucormycosis on Tuesday, making her the first person to succimb to black fungus , a rare infection that occurs in the lungs, nasal passage and sinuses and often harms the eyes.
The number of Covid patinets with black fungus has been rising in Jharkhand at an alarming rate with no less than 30 cases being reported in the last 72 hours.
Doctors at Bhagwan Mahavir Medica Superspecialty Hospital in Ranchi said the Jamshedpur woman, who died before she could be shifted to the private healthcare facility in the state capital, was diabetic and needed immediate medical attention.
Talks are on with manufacturers of the drug to raise its availability and the supply position is expected to improve with extra imports of the medicine and increase in its production domestically.
