Elkins official addresses vote counting delays | News, Sports, Jobs

bjohnson@theintermountain.com ELKINS Elkins City Clerk Jessica Sutton took a moment during this week’s Elkins City Council meeting to address the reasons why counting the ballots in Tuesday’s municipal election took “significantly longer” than on past election nights. The election totals were not released by the city until 1 a.m. Wednesday morning, and no results from any wards were posted until well after 11 p.m. Tuesday. The polls closed at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. “After hearing a number of inaccurate comments surrounding the election and recognizing that a majority of people don’t have the benefit of insight that election officials and poll workers have, I wanted to provide a brief overview of what election day in Elkins looks like from the inside,” Sutton said in reading from a prepared statement during Thursday night’s city council meeting.

Elkins Council votes down ATV ordinance | News, Sports, Jobs

bjohnson@theintermountain.com ELKINS Elkins City Council voted down a proposed ordinance Thursday evening that would have allowed ATVs and UTVs to drive on city streets. Three council members voted in favor of the proposed ordinance Thursday, while seven members voted against it. The proposal had been returned to the Rules and Ordinance Committee for revision after it divided council on a 5-5 vote in December. City Clerk Jessica Sutton began the discussion of the proposed ordinance at Thursday’s meeting by saying it had been “substantively changed,” although several council members then criticized the proposal and said it had not been changed enough.

Vehicle, items stolen from YouthBuild | News, Sports, Jobs

Staff Writer ELKINS The Randolph County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a theft that occurred earlier this week at YouthBuild North Central. The incident occurred between 4:15 p.m. Jan. 25 to 6:20 a.m. Jan. 26 at the organization’s building in Highland Park. During the incident a 2013 Ford Escape was stolen along with a long list of tools from the facility. “Our office responded to YouthBuild on Tuesday for a breaking and entering call,” Randolph County Sheriff Rob Elbon said. “A vehicle and tools were stolen for the property somewhere between late Monday evening to early Tuesday morning. The vehicle has red/maroon county tags on it and the Ford oval on the back is worn and appears to be black from age. There are also some rust spots on the back of the trunk lid.”

SWAT team called in to Elkins incident | News, Sports, Jobs

bjohnson@theintermountain.com Local law enforcement officers and the Elkins Fire Department blocked several streets near Jennings Randolph Elementary School Thursday evening. ELKINS Elkins residents were asked to stay at home Thursday evening after a man barricaded himself inside his home and the situation developed into a police SWAT team operation. At 8:08 p.m. Thursday, the City of Elkins released the following information: “Law enforcement officers are on-scene at a house on Evans Drive, where a suspect is barricaded inside. There are no other suspects at large. Please continue to shelter in place and do not approach this area, as the situation remains dangerous.”
