COVID deficit will continue to impact St Charles budget

Updated 3/4/2021 5:51 PM St. Charles Finance Director Chris Minick has a term for the budget difficulties the city s endured for the last year: the COVID deficit. At last weekend s city council retreat, for the first time Minick outlined for Mayor Ray Rogina and the aldermen the ongoing impact of a COVID deficit that will create a nearly $3.2 million hole in the projected budget for the 2021-22 fiscal year that begins on May 1.   Minick said projected revenue of about $47 million is shy of a normal year where the city would expect $49.25 million. A significant amount of the decrease is from hotel/motel tax revenue that s projected to be at $750,000, compared with $2.2 million in a normal fiscal year.

Lencioni runs for alderman, but St Charles ordinance could keep him from taking office

Updated 12/28/2020 7:07 AM Like all the other alderman candidates in St. Charles, Paul Lencioni picked up his candidate packet, gathered the required signatures and met the deadline for submitting the materials to city officials. That s where the comparisons end.   Unlike the others running for office, the president and CEO of Blue Goose Market faces an opponent beyond his Ward 3 challenger on the April 6 ballot: a city ordinance preventing liquor license holders from serving in an elected position. It s been on the books for decades and has remained there long after the state relaxed regulations regarding public officials and liquor licenses in municipalities with fewer than 55,000 people.

Fox Valley filing: At least 3 mayoral races will be contested in April

An earlier version misspelled Jennifer Konen s name. There will be at least three contested mayor and village president elections this spring in the Fox Valley, including in St. Charles and Sugar Grove. St. Charles aldermen Maureen Lewis and Lora Vitek are seeking to become the city s next mayor and submitted their nominating petitions Monday, the first day of filing for most municipal and school positions in the April 6 consolidated election. Incumbent Mayor Ray Rogina isn t seeking reelection.   Meanwhile, Sugar Grove Village President Sean Michels, who has held the office since 1999, is being challenged by village Trustee Jennifer Konen, who has been on the board less than two years.
