Palm Coast City Council deadlocks on county s proposed sales tax

A divided Palm Coast City Council did not vote on a resolution to support a Flagler County half-cent sales tax, once again demonstrating the split which has deadlocked members on several issues. The resolution to support the half-cent sales tax to pay for public safety-related expenses failed because no one seconded a motion to support it during Tuesday’s meeting. People shopping in Flagler County currently pay a 7% sales tax, which includes 6% from the state, 0.5% from the county and 0.5% from the School Board. “The County is the only one in the state that’s eligible for the small county surtax that is not levying the full 1%,” according to an email from E. John Brower, the county’s financial services director.

Palm Coast mayoral candidates debate planned for July 6

The News-Journal is pleased to announce that it will host and moderate a debate between all six candidates for Palm Coast mayor on Tuesday, July 6. Cornelia Manfre, Alan Lowe, Doug Courtney, Carol Bacha, Kathy Austrino and David Alfin are vying to be the next mayor of the city which was incorporated in 1999. A special mayoral election for the position will be held July 27. The election was called after the sudden resignation of former Mayor Milissa Holland in May. News-Journal Editor Pat Rice will moderate the debate. Palm Coast is growing rapidly and has tremendous potential, but the city also is facing a variety of challenges, Rice said. City Hall has gone through significant management turnover during the past two years, including the most recent resignation of former City Manager Matt Morton.
