Southern New Jersey Fishing Report – May 6, 2021

Southern New Jersey Fishing Report – May 6, 2021 May 6, 2021 Now that tautog season is finished, anglers have begun to focus on the re-opening on our black sea bass season (May 15th) and the summer flounder season opening May 22nd. This past week striped bass up to 32 inches have been more cooperative along the beaches and Cape May is starting to see better numbers of bigger bass as the Delaware river post-spawners round the tip. Drum fishing has been better since the last moon phase in April and the next several weeks should be “game on” for the boomers of the night. Bluefish continue to entertain most jetty and inlet fisherman with the incoming tide being the best bet to find them. Weakfish, weakfish, and more weakfish are being landed from jetties and bay areas from Atlantic City to Cape May. Unfortunately or fortunately, the word is out on the weeks.

Southern New Jersey Fishing Report - April 29, 2021

April 29, 2021 Cue the eerie music or maybe “Hallelujah!” – “They’re here!!”  It’s a welcome sight for many anglers working the coastal inlets as bluefish have arrived and by the social media posts they are biting on plugs and metals.  Some of the fish have been close to 10 pounds, so now is the time to hit the jetties.  I heard of bluefish arriving from Manasquan Inlet, Barnegat Inlet, Brigantine, and south almost around the same time in the last 24 hours.  Speaking of the jetties, anglers, have only 2 days left to get a few keeper blackfish as the season officially closes May 1.  Jigs or rigs tipped with clam and green crabs have been the good baits to use.  Striped bass in the 14- to 27-inch range are picking up clams, soft plastics, and small plugs in the backwaters.

Southern New Jersey Fishing Report - April 22, 2021

April 22, 2021 John Valdez has been finding some good stripers prowling around Ocean City, willing to take paddle-tail soft plastics. This past week had some better news of more typical spring species being landed: drum, weakfish, striped bass, and tog. We are still waiting to here consistent action on bluefish, but hopefully that will happen in a few weeks. The Cape May areas saw an exceptional drum bite last year, so many anglers are hoping of a repeat. Striped bass fishing has been very consistent on fish from 16 to 28 inches, but there were a few reports of some 41 inchers being landed off the beach. There are still a ton of big girls swimming up the Delaware River from Philadelphia to Trenton. One of my clients took his daughter Ellie striped bas fishing and released a solid 41 inch bass – kudos to Matt and his daughter Ellie. Tog fisherman have been catching some nice tog to 10 pounds over the past week and it seems the action has been very consistent.

Southern New Jersey Fishing Report - April 1, 2021

One Stop Bait and Tackle Reported good striper fishing with bloodworms this week. Striped bass have been more active, especially with the warmer temperatures, but the winds have been very tough.  Bridges and areas having the warmest water have had the most action.  Now, cue the balloons and fireworks our beloved tog season opens today and fishing should be good from the weekend into next week as the winds and sea conditions look very promising.  Anglers working the jetty with clam or small pieces of green crab should also have shots at them. Here is this week’s rundown: Lacey Marine in Forked River had more reports of small striped bass and some winter flounder being caught south of the Route 37 bridge.  Some anglers working the ends of the Lacey lagoons are finding schoolie action at night.  The shop has a variety of jigs for the opening on Tog season.
