India is expected to see a surge in Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) deployments starting in 2024, according to Sanjay Bakaya, country head for India at US-based Mavenir. The Indian market is complex due to its large user base, high population density, and diverse conditions. Top telcos Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea have explored O-RAN-based networks, but have not yet started deployments due to a lack of a mature ecosystem.
US based Mavenir, which has been a major player in Open RAN technology space, says the technology is already a success in many of the markets around the world both in greenfield and in brownfield deployments.
Mavenir: In India, Mavneir has started working with India’s second largest telco, Bharti Airtel, to deploy OpenRAN-based 4G and 5G sites in the low-revenue generating rural parts of the country to lower its capital expenditure.
