Yesterday, hospitality players said the move by the national carrier will bolster efforts to revive the tourism sector in Malindi, Kilifi County, which until mid-2000 was the preferred destination for Italians.
In the 1960s, Malindi carved a niche as the ideal resort town for the Italian tourists, which saw it brimming with restaurants, delis, gelato shops and pizzerias.
The relationship between Italy and Kenya was, however, cemented by the construction of the Rome-run Broglio Space Centre in Malindi. But in 2008 a slump began to happen with an estimated 4,000 Italians who lived in the town migrating back to their country. Most of the estimated 30,000 Italians who visited the town stopped.

Skyward will operate four weekly flights on the Mombasa-Malindi-Lamu route from Wednesday, the airline said.
Business and holiday travellers on the North Coast often prefer air travel as it takes only about 30 minutes compared to about four to five hours on the Mombasa- Lamu road.
In a press statement, Skyward Express said flights will be operating on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday from Moi International Airport in Mombasa to Lamu via Malindi.
Maureen Awuor, the Kenya Association of Hotel Keepers and Caterers (KAHC) Kilifi chairperson, who is also the general manager at the Ocean Beach Resort in Malindi said they are optimistic that the additional flights would attract more domestic tourists to visit the region.

Easter projections at Coast hotels now stand at 10 per cent after the new lockdown measures announced by President Uhuru Kenyatta last Friday to stem the spread of the third wave of Covid-19.
Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers and Caterers (KAHC) Coast branch executive officer Sam Ikwaye said those who had booked for Easter holidays have had to shelve their plans due to the new restrictions.
“It is definitely not business as usual. It is a low key affair as many potential guests have rescinded their holiday plans,” Ikwaye said
