Weber buys June to bring smart oven tech in-house
Chris Davies - Jan 12, 2021, 3:42pm CST
Weber has acquired June, with the grilling icon eating up the smart oven startup that it previously collaborated with. The deal – terms of which have not been disclosed – will see June continue to offer its connected multi-purpose ovens, which boast convection, air fryer, grill, broiling, and slow cooking from one device, among other talents.
Indeed, June’s big claim was that its eponymous oven, launched back in 2015, could replace most of the other separate cooking devices found in the average kitchen. The only thing it wasn’t, in fact, was the microwave it most closely resembled. Controlled via a touchscreen embedded in the door, it also included connectivity to a remote app that even shows live video within the oven.

Weber enlisted June, the company behind the June smart ovens, to help it build Weber Connect. That platform powers both the Weber Connect Smart Grilling Hub and the connected features on the SmokeFire pellet grills. Both of those devices run on JuneOS, the same technology that runs on the company’s ovens. Today, Weber announced it will acquire 100 percent of June, and that includes “its proprietary software, technology, intellectual property and the June Oven line of products and accessories.” Financial terms weren’t disclosed.
“We ve been working together for almost three years to create and launch products in the market,” Weber CEO Chris Scherzinger told Engadget. “Weber Connect is the cornerstone, powered by June’s operating system, which is the architecture and the software engine of the June oven, but now applied to the grilling space.”
Weber acquires smart cooking startup June
Outdoor cooking industry leader and famed kettle-grill-maker Weber has acquired June, the smart cooking startup founded in 2013 by Matt Van Horn and Nikhil Bhogal. While financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, Weber has confirmed that June will continue to operate as its own brand wholly owned by Weber-Stephen Products and will continue to both sell and develop the June Oven and related products. Meanwhile, June co-founder Nikhil Bhogal will take on a role as SVP of Technology and Connected Devices across the Weber lineup.
Weber had already teamed up with June, with the startup providing the technology and expertise behind its Weber Connect smart grilling platform. That includes both the Weber Connect Smart Grilling Hub, which adds connected smart grill features to any grill, and the built-in smart cooking features on its SmokeFire line of wood pellet grills. That partnership began with a cold email Van Horn received in 2018 from t
