refused to take her to the metro and paid nothing for the laborers and constantly belittled and abused by her employer. [ speaking in a foreign language ] >> you're stupid, you're an idiot, you're lazy. >> reporter: one day she saw a tv show about human trafficking, wrote down a rescue line phone number, got access to a phone a few days later and called for help. the nonprofit group casa of maryland sent a team of four people to the front door. >> belinda karen, the employer, opened the door, was extremely startled and started yelling, why are all of these people here, what are you doing here? and jeanette said at that point belinda was blocking the door and jeanette slipped under her arm and came with us. >> reporter: it is said she violated federal laws, with forced labor. she is also asking for back wages for four months of work. we reached karen and she referred us to her attorney. he said he would have no comment until he saw the complaint filed in court. the fbi on the hunt for a serial killers at number of victims continues to grow. 20 cases in three states, from virginia, michigan and ohio, all linked to the same suspect. and tonight we have new video showing the killer moments before he attacked his last victim in leesberg. sherry ly is live there with the latest developments now. sherry? >> reporter: well brian, police got the video from surveillance cameras at the shopping center where the last leesburg victim was attacked with a hammer. the cameras that are right up here, we're told by police, captured the suspect stalking his victims like prey and then attacking. this video is all police are sharing right now. just moments before trying to kill a 19-year-old with a hammer, police say youee the suspect drive through the leesberg plaza shopping center on surveillance video, he's driving the same suv spotted in three states linked to a series of stabbings, five of them deadly. in this updated picture police say it's a dark chevy is-10 blazer with a dark trim. but the suspects suv does not have a bug shield. the leesberg attacks are linked to similar stabbings in flint, michigan, where a 16th victim has come forward. and investigators are working with those in ohio where a man was stabbed in toledo, ohio. no one knows where the suspect will strike next. >> this person has a high propensity for crime and would you not be surprised if there were more crimes perhaps not reported in other locationsa around the country. >> reporter: police do believe these are racially motivated given that all of the victims have been african-american in most cases. police don't know if the suspect is connected to any hate groups. >> what is this person's connection to our area. we're talking michigan, ohio and then leesberg, virginia. >> reporter: that seems to stump investigators in this case. they haven't been able to make any connections between leesberg, toledo, ohio, and flint, michigan. this suspect could randomly picking victims in whatever city he may go. >> sherry ly reporting for us tonight. and this man, as you heard, everybody on edge. who is he and what is driving him to do this? karen gray houston sat down today with a prominent criminal profiler to get insight. karen, what did you find out? >> reporter: when you try to stare into the heart of a serial killer, it can make chills run up and down your spine. we spoke to pat brown. she's convinced the man attacking people in leesberg is the same from the attacks of toledo, ohio and flint, michigan and believes he will stab again. pat brown has spent her life tracking the lives of serial killers and psycho paths. she's written a book about it. and she said the man police are looking for is typical of serial killers. >> they are usually down on their luck, they've lost a job or girlfriend and angry at society. >> reporter: so she thinks he's striking out in rage, driving the same green suv, not afraid to show his face or baseball cap and earring. like police in leesberg and possibly flint and toledo, brown believes there is a connection, since there was so many victims in michigan. >> after the police put the pressure out in flint, michigan, this guy knew he couldn't stab there again, so i think he went to another location that he knows, perhaps a relative or friend's home. >> reporter: the victims have been small in stature, elderly or black. law enforcement officials won't say his motive is race-based. >> one of the victims was white and we certainly are not in a position to say that. we don't know what is the mind of this assailant. >> these look like racially motivated crimes but when you talk about psycho paths, that's not often the issue. often they are looking for an easy victim group and an excuse to do what they do. >> reporter: and while the families of victims who were murdered in michigan mourn their loss. brown said she's not convinced the suspect wants to kill anybody. >> this man is a serial stabber who had some people die on him. i real purpose is to get the rage out, to jump out to somebody and say uh-huh, i got you >> she said he will ditch the car and get a new hat and her advice is don't go out alone at night and don't turn your back on a stranger who gets out of a green suv asking for directions. following that developing story out of alaska. a plane crash killed senator ted stevens and others. shawn o'keefe and his son are survivors. they were on the way to a fishing trip. the weather complicated the research overnight. >> it's alaska so you can only imagine what the weather conditions have been, which has been awful. we've only had a quarter mile visibility. it hasn't improved. terrain out there is very mountainous and hilly and so it's probably been difficult and that's been part of the problem of why we haven't been able to get there until early this morning. >> stevens was 86 years old. a friend claims he and o'keefe were long time fishing buddies. he was -- he lost re-election in 2008. still ahead on the news edge, a new study shows a growing gap between government and private worker pay and perhaps not the way you might think. and plus a driver and some fast food workers battling it out at the drive-through window. what caused that lady to go nuts? this may look like nothing more than a pile of dirt, but once you learn what is really going on here, you'll be hungry for more information. i already look forward to your report. we're in the record books again today, tieing the record of 98 degrees in d.c. how long is this round of hot days going to go on? probably long enough to finish up redskins training camp. but did you notice the drop in humidity this afternoon, dave feldman. >> reporter: i did. and we have two californians vying for a job here, and lindsey murphy has the latest on stephen strasburg. we'll have that coming up in minutes. a new report out today showing the difference between the private and government pay. federal workers more than double. on average the private workers make $61,000 a year. the average for a federal employee about $123,000. times could be changing slightly. president obama recently ordered a freeze on bonuses for some federal workers. there is a new candidate in the spotlight in the maryland governor's race. his name is brian murphy. he's a republican. haven't heard about him? most people hadn't until he earned the endorsement of sarah palin. this morning he talked about what sarah palin will do for his support now? >> it gives my campaign a chance to do what we've been doing, which is talk about three things -- jobs, the economy and taxes. it's a huge megaphone. i'm the only candidate talking like this. we have a big budget problem and i'm focused on it and that's what i'm doing and now we have a chance to get in the spotlight and change things. >> he faces bobberlick in the primary. it's the kind of food you would expect to find at a farmer's market. >> i've never seen anything like it, fresh foods and vegetables. i thought it was phenomenal. >> reporter: how the food cycle has come full circle at a food bank. there are temper tantrums and then this. why this woman freaked out at a drive-through window. and this guy's marriage proposal was a social networking success. matt van horn, a business executive streamed video of sunday's pro'sal to family -- proposal to family and friends and he synced it with his four square and twitter accounts so everybody knew when to tune in. by the way, she said yes. there's oil out there we've got to capture. my job is to hunt it down. i'm fred lemond, and i'm in charge of bp's efforts to remove oil from these waters. you may have heard that oil is no longer flowing into the gulf, but our spotter planes and helicopters will keep searching. we've still got thousands of vessels ready to clean up any oil we find. we've skimmed over 35 million gallons of oil/water mixture. i grew up on the gulf coast and i love these waters. we'll be here as long as it takes to clean up the gulf. from the farm to the food bank. that may not be what you expect. after all food banks are full of canned goods. not necessarily. one local nonprofit is changing that and hoping the food chain comes full circle. beth parker has the story. >> reporter: crisp green vegetables, sweet corn, something you expect to find at the farmer's market. this is the mana food shelter. they buy from the farmers. >> i've never seen anything like it. >> reporter: paul dickerson lined up here to help feed his family. he's a barber with his own business but it's not enough to get by. >> in my mind, i have no idea how much they are actually helping all of our families. >> reporter: here at mana they've built a relationship with the farmers by buying food from them and because of that, they are also getting seconds. so the farmers are giving them things like this, this is an extra large zucchini. look at how big it is compared to a typical zucchini . this is something a farmer would probably leave out in the field instead of selling. but in this case it's perfectly useful here at the food bank. >> i had one lady tell me how excited she was to share a water melon with her children for the first time. it was just -- its heart-felt. >> reporter: and in the past food donated by a grocery store was spoiled, they had to throw it away. and now they're dropping into a compost box. some changed to button farm in germantown. >> anything that grows out of the ground or comes from an animal needs to go into another animal or back to the ground. >> reporter: six months later the old fruits and vegetables become fertilizer for the same farmers that helped the food bank and closing the loop and growing food and a sense of community too. beth parker, fox 5 news. there are a lot of fresh vegetables but mona food center is low on canned goods. they are trying to ramp up and are accepting donations at the entrances of the montgomery county fair. you see this? road rage at the mcdonald's drive through. an ohio woman goes ballistic because it was too early to get chicken mcnuggets. you can see the news did not sit well with her. she reached through the drive- through, decked one worker and then another one comes over and decked that one too. and then they shut the window on her finally. as they get it closed, and grab her hair, she got a bottle out of her car and bashed the windowment and the moral of the story is she got sentenced to 60 days in jail and didn't get her mcnuggets. >> is it just me or are a lot of people really angry? >> on edge, yes. >> life is too short for those people. >> i was out of town the last couple of days, i flew in last night and i saw a lady at the airport and i said i guess it's been hot here. she said i want to get on a plan and go somewhere cooler. i've never heard of that. >> you heard about moscow, the worst heat wave in a thousand years and we're in the record books today. 98 degrees. good news, only one more hot day. and are you ready for some 80s. at some point it will be back. in the winter we said at some point it will be warm again and now today we tied the record at reagan national. not at dulles or bwi. we are virtually storm free with the exception of front royal with a little bit of a downpour. tomorrow we may see more showers. high temperatures today, as mentioned, 98 degrees does tie the record at reagan. bwi 97. the humidity got lower through the afternoon so perhaps it wasn't as difficult to be out in it as it would be say on a june day. we've had a number of these days notice up -- in the upper 90s. tomorrow will be more humid on wednesday and with that increase in humidity we could see more storms in the afternoon. very spotty. on thursday there could be a few more as well. but less hot on thursdayment a cool front will slip on through. and while it's not going to necessarily bring us to cooler 70s. maybe upper 80s and low 90s and that will go on into the weekend. we may be talking about another tropical storm heading into the gulf of mexico. it is not a depression but it's being watched and i'll show you that on satellite and radar in a moment. d.c. is 96 degrees right now. annapolis is 90. and quantico also at 90. fredericksberg, the hot spot at 96. and frederick, maryland, hot at 97. but when we factor in the humidity, we get the heat index and it feels like 101 in quantico. and hot spot, fredericksberg is 104 is your heat index. 103 at culpeper. there is one little downpour that we are watching. i don't see any lightning east of front royalch it's not moving quickly. a few clouds around and that is it, but all eyes just off the coast of florida. this area of low pressure may become a depression and could become tropical storm danielle in the next 24- -- to 36 hours. they are shutting down the drilling operation for the bottom kill because this is making huge waves. it could head toward the louisiana coast by thursday. we'll continue to watch it. right now it will be either subtropical, but does not look like it will become a hurricane. fair skies for us tonight. 77 degrees. tomorrow a hot day, more humid, a spotty afternoon storm is possible. we'll get up to 97 degrees. quick look at your planner. by noon 94 and again feeling hotter than that and by 5:00, 97 degrees. here is your five-day forecast. yes, i've got a couple of 80s on this map. how about on friday at 88 degrees. maybe, just maybe, not too bad of a weekend. we could see a late storm on sunday, brian and of course when tropical moisture enters the picture we have to see where that goes down the road. if this were to get into the louisiana coast op thursday, maybe we've got some showers to factor in later. but so far, so good. should be fun for the redskins game on friday night. >> right on. >> bill is coming to town and i think it will be fairly comfortable. >> thank you. some vets will have to watch the preredskins season opening from the side lines. dave feldman from the side lines. >> reporter: we have an injury update coming up. and also a friendly competition between two former california golden bears. and a live report from nats stadium as stephen strasburg is back on the hill. all of that is coming up. but if you're a justin beiber fan, look away. a month old video of him getting bopped in the head with a water bottle. it happened in december with a water bottle. the damage to his bowl cut is still unknown. hi, everybody. i'm dave feldman live at redskins park with an injury update. malcolm kelly continues to have hamstring problems. did not practice today. has been ruled out for friday night's game against the bills. jamal brown the tackle also out. mild participation today. he won't play. clinton portis has a mild groin injury but so far no word on whether he'll play at all friday when the bills come to town. competition has been heating up here though. one particular battle is pitting two former california bear teammates. andre carter and lorenzo alexander. they are vying for an outside linebacker spot in the 3-4 defense. and the two are putting first what is bfor the team. >> me and andre are great friends. he's taken me under his wing at cal and we are just competing and trying to make each other better and we want to get w.'s. >> and we both play d line and we both take notes and ask each other questions and it's all about growth, especially with the new defense. >> reporter: there is a new defense and now hopefully some new offense tonight and that starts with a guy names stephen strasburg who is on the mound. lindsey murphy is live at nats park. >> i want to give you a quick time line. two weeks ago today stephen strasburg was scratched from the start. two days after that he was placed on the 15-day d.l. and today he'll pitch in a game for the first time since july 21st. now steven was boasting a 5-2 record with 75 strikeouts when he was sent to the d.l. with the shoulder inflammation. last thursday he flew a simulated game in arizona, this saturday he threw a bullpen session and looked and felt really good, but he is going to be on a short leash because he's missed three starts. he'll most likely go five or six innings, throwing under 90 pitches but manager jim wriggle man will pay close attention to his starting pitcher. >> we've done everything we can do and he's feeling good, as i said. he's done all of this work, he's felt good in his bullpen sessions so we anticipate everything will be fine but never take anything for granted. >> reporter: if you want to switch spots on thursday, if you are one of the first 15 fans you can get the stephen strasburg major league debut on thursday. >> thank you, lindsey murphy into today was college media day. the terps are trying to rebound from a season that did not go well last year. they are hoping to turn things around after a 2-10 season. maryland has been picked to finish last in the division. the september 6th opener is soon and it couldn't come soon enough for head coach ralph friedgen. >> the sense i have is to get this bad taste out of my mouth. 2-10 is the worst record i've had since i've been in coaching. that's the sense of urgency. >> ralph friedgen with a sense of urgency. we'll have chemo chemo oughto who had to be helped off the field. he had to be helped off the field after the afternoon walk- through. we'll have an update tonight. from redskins park. back to you. it's
