福島大や京都大などのチームは、川から泳ぎ出て、はるか外洋まで繁殖に向かう天然ウナギの旅立ちを、初めてとらえることに成功した。
福島大の和田敏裕准教授らはこうした行動を詳しく調べようと、太平洋に面し、陸に囲まれた汽水域が広がる福島県相馬市の内湾「松川浦」に注目した。
松川浦で集めた天然ウナギ20匹（平均体長52センチ）と養鰻（ようまん）業者から提供を受けた養殖ウナギ12匹（同58センチ）の腹部に切れ目を入れ、3分ごとに超音波を出す発信機を入れて縫合した。
計32匹を放流し、汽水域や川に設置した28カ所の受信機を使って2016～17年の約1年4カ月間、ウナギたちの行動を追跡した。
当初は湾口から南に7キロ奥に入った水域にすんでいたが、10日ほどかけて徐々に湾口に近づいた。引き潮の時間、
