Broadsheet ‘recycled’ NAB’s reports on Sharifs

LONDON: The former director-general of the National Accountability Bureau’s Financial Crimes Investigations Wing told the London High Court that Matrix Researchers investigators, working for Broadsheet LLC, had recycled NAB’s own reports on Nawaz Sharif and presented to the NAB as new information without adding anything or tracing any assets of the former premier and his family members.
According to Talat Ghumman’s statement before Sir Anthony Evans in July 2015, the senior NAB official told the court Broadsheet didn’t have it’s own capacity to investigate and trace assets and it hired Matrix Research Limited to investigate Nawaz Sharif and his family members at a total cost of around £500,000 but the information gathered on the Sharif family didn’t impress the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) investigators who were looking for seriously actionable evidence of wrongdoing and illici

LONDON: General Khalid Maqbool, the second Chairman of National Accountability Bureau (NAB), has said Pakistan signed the contract with Broadsheet LLC to deal with the “common perception that our elite had removed money and assets from Pakistan to outside” and got trapped as Broadsheet started making demands on recoveries from inside Pakistan, using the contractual clauses.
General Khalid Maqbool, who served as NAB Chairman from September 26, 2000 to October 20, 2001 after General Amjad left NAB, told the arbitration judge as a witness that there was public pressure and Pakistani authorities thought that Broadsheet would actually find the assets as perceived.

Sir Anthony Evans noted in his judgment that the whole story of Broadsheet and NAB agreement started in the late 1999 when Nawaz Sharif was deposed and Pervez Musharraf took over with zeal to clean up Pakistan and repatriate the alleged stolen wealth.
