Embrace it: Champagne with little or no added sugar

Embrace it: Champagne with little or no added sugar Dave McIntyre, The Washington Post Dec. 18, 2020 FacebookTwitterEmail Champagne Billecart-Salmon Brut Nature.Leif Carlsson With all that s happened this year, word that the champagne house Billecart-Salmon has released its first brut nature cuvée will not rank in the top stories of 2020, even in wine. But somewhere, a champagne geek s eyebrows are bouncing up and down, creating ripples in the wine-time continuum that may have subtle effects in how we savor our bubbles in the future. Champagne is fixed in our imagination as the wine of luxury and frivolity, extolled in belle epoque-style posters as the favorite tipple of les belles femmes de Paris, dangling bare ankles as they lift their sparkling coupes in a toast to the good life. That image persists because champagne producers have embraced it and prices have supported it. Champagne has not evolved much, because it doesn t have incentive to do so.

MONEYWEB app instead? Fancy gifting a bottle of vino this year? Read this. By Elin McCoy, Bloomberg 13 Dec 2020  00:12  Image: Shutterstock Picking my annual 50 under $50 list was extremely difficult this year. You can now find bargain bubbly from everywhere, including Greece, California, and South Africa. My fizz surprise of the year was the quality of bottles from Brazil. Add in the ever-expanding number of  pétillant naturel wines now available, and you could enjoy a different—and good—fizz each day of the year. Experiment!

Wines of the world: 50 of the best for under R760

Wines of the world: 50 of the best for under R760 South Africans have a special relationship with wine. After all, the country’s vineyards and wineries produce some of the best wines in the world. This year, the viticulture industry was all but crushed by a stringent lockdown. In 2019 there were 98437 hectares of land under vines, according to South African Wine Industry information and Systems. These vineyards produced 319 782 880 litres of wine for export. The viticulture industry has been battling a three year drought before Covid-19 lockdowns hammered the industry this year. Wineries and related tourism in the country employed over 300000 people. It is unclear exactly how many people lost their jobs when the industry ground to a halt. When you raise your glass this festive season, please consider filling it with a locally produced tipple…There are a few on this tantalising list. – Melani Nathan
