The trial for a man accused in an alleged gun trafficking ring that spanned from Brandon to Edmonton resumed on Thursday, with more details coming out about the accused’s time in Edmonton.
Mathieu Plamondon pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiring to commit an indictable offence, possession of restricted and non-restricted firearms for the purpose of trafficking and trafficking restricted and non-restricted firearms.
In total, he is accused of trafficking 16 restricted and two non-restricted firearms in May 2018.
The charges are still before the court and the multi-week trial is ongoing.
During the initial days of the trial in December 2020, the court heard how one of Plamondon’s co-accused allegedly stole guns from his father and discussed selling them.

The outbreak of COVID-19 at the Brandon Correctional Centre is growing rapidly, with 37 new cases confirmed at the jail on Tuesday.
As of Tuesday morning, 94 people at the jail had tested positive 17 staff members and 77 inmates, according to numbers provided by Manitoba Justice. There are 88 active cases at the facility and six people have recovered.
On Monday, 42 inmates had tested positive, meaning 35 new cases were found among inmates in the institution that has a rated capacity of 244 adult men.
The number cases at the jail is a major concern, said Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union president Michelle Gawronsky. The union represents approximately 190 workers at the jail.

Ten police officers testified about their wide-ranging surveillance of a Brandon man accused of travelling to Edmonton to sell 18 guns in 2018 during the fourth day of the trial of Mathieu Plamondon.
Plamondon pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiring to commit an indictable offence, possession of restricted and non-restricted firearms for the purpose of trafficking them and trafficking restricted and non-restricted firearms.

The Edmonton Police Service had a significant surveillance operation going to watch Plamondon in the day leading up to his arrest on May 25, 2018, a Brandon provincial courtroom heard. All 10 officers were called to testify by Crown attorneys.
