I, Robert Mugabe, underthe constitution of section one in zimbabwe, tender my resignation as the president of the republic of zimbabwe with immediate effect. Mr mugabes letter said his decision was taken to allow a smooth transition of power and that it was voluntary. Voluntarys one word for it unavoidable is another. Mr mugabe refused to resign after last weeks military takeover. He refused to resign after mass protests at the weekend. He refused to resign when he was sacked by his own party on sunday. And he ignored a deadline to go on monday. He even called his normal Cabinet Meeting for tuesday. But theres nothing normal about this tuesday. The pressure told and his 37 years as president ended.
