The city of Kirksville recognized police Sgt. Juan Chairez for 15 years of service with the city. Chairez began with the Kirksville Police Department on March 16, 2009. He was promoted to Master Police Officer in 2014 and Sergeant in September 2019. Chairez is a Hostage/Crisis Negotiator, Impaired Driving Instructor, Certified Field Training Officer and previously served on the SWAT Team. Chairez received the Meritorious Service Award in 2014 and Lifesaving Award in 2018.

Buddy will be the first police therapy dog permanently paired with a co-responder team in Colorado. His trainer, Michael Connors, said the dog has an "intuitive response to stress."
