New bill targets food insecurity at public campuses

WORCESTER – State Sen. Harriette L. Chandler, D-Worcester, and several other lawmakers have filed a bill aimed at alleviating food insecurity at public colleges and universities in the state. “An Act establishing the Massachusetts Hunger-Free Campus Initiative” includes steps like creating a hunger prevention task force, developing student meal credit-sharing programs, and establishing emergency funds for students in need of financial support. It also would provide funding to help schools implement those measures. Access to food is a fundamental survival need and all students deserve a hunger-free campus. Unfortunately, food insecurity and hunger are daily struggles for some Massachusetts college students, many of whom are already saddled by loan debt and the stress of schoolwork,” said Chandler. “This bill seeks to empower students and colleges to address food insecurity together and to chart a path towards hunger-free campuses statewide.”
